"Whoa - food coma!"

That's what Steve and I exclaimed as we left Mayberry and crossed Vine St. toward the library. It's a good thing the library and restaurant are so close to each other; simply crossing the street proved a challenge.

Chef Joshua Campbell, who is also the mastermind behind World Food Bar at Findlay Market, has designed a revolving menu showcasing comfort food that offers an affordable twist on everyday classics.

Mayberry: A Grassroots American Eatery

The restaurant is small - seating a mere 30 patrons - but the stylishly mod, monochromatic decor of circles, iconic paintings and crisp white window dressing combine to make the space feel larger than it is, though it probably doesn't seem that way during the lunch crush.

Choose from a list on the chalkboard menu at the counter and grab a seat. Food is made to order and some items take longer than others. Trust me though, it's worth the wait. On the day we visited I thought I was hungry enough to eat both a veggie burger ($8) and an order of their tater tot casserole ($3), which a friend had highly recommended. Little did I know that the veggie burger at Mayberry isn't just a meal, it is an event.

Taking up over half a foot of airspace, this is not your Aunt Bee's burger. Sure the bun adds a few inches, but the patty - loaded with lentils, shredded carrot and a healthy dose of chili powder - is the B52 of burgers. As delicious as it is big, this sucker will bomb your tastebuds into tomorrow.

Not to be outdone, the 12 oz. Angus burger ($8) that Steve ordered comes with its own zip code. Well okay, not really, but it does come with its own breakfast of peppercorn bacon and a poached egg on top, plus a heaping helping of onion marmalade that will make the mouth sing. A spring mix salad with homemade house dressing rounds out all entrees.

While the small but mighty menu offers an eclectic mix of entrees - you'll find quarter pound all-beef franks and fish tacos on the lunch menu - vegetarians can also make a meal out of the side dishes. Choose from a yogurt Waldorf salad, pasta salad, mac'n'cheese or the yummy starchy goodness of their awesome tater tot casserole.

Mayberry is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Saturday evenings from 6-9:30 p.m. On Sundays they host brunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The restaurant also offers boxed lunches and full-service catering.

Nobody is going to leave hungry at Mayberry. Depending on how long it takes for the food coma to set in, some may not even leave the restaurant at all!

Event: Eat Local for the Globe

I have already confirmed that there will be a veggie option available. Yay!

The Corporation for Findlay Market will host the first “Eat Local for the Globe” event at Rookwood Pottery on June 10, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Guests of “Eat Local for the Globe” will enjoy a five course locally sourced meal prepared by Radkey and Miller, wine and live music for $45 per person. The event is limited to 100 guests.

“The Corporation for Findlay Market is focused on encouraging shoppers to buy fresh and local products in addition to building an authentic and vibrant environment for food and food related economic activity and social interaction in the great public space that is Findlay Market,” said Karen Kahle, Resource Development Director at the Corporation for Findlay Market. “Purchasing locally grown products provides a boon to the local economy, ‘Eat Local for the Globe’ is a unique event highlighting the talents of local chefs and ingredients.”

“Eat Local for the Globe” includes an interactive element – Cincinnati locavores are invited to design an appetizer recipe utilizing locally sourced ingredients. The winning recipe will be prepared as an amuse-bouche, a single, bite-sized hors d’Ĺ“uvre, and served at the event. The recipes will be judged by Radkey and Miller and the winner will receive two free tickets, join the chefs on June 10th as they prepare the five course meal and be introduced with the winning dish at the event. Prior to the five course meal, guests are invited to tour the Globe Building, located on the Western side of Findlay Market on Elm Street, and hear from project architects at City Studios Architecture about plans to redevelop this historic building on the Market Square.

• Online contest inviting local foodies to design an appetizer for the event using locally sourced ingredients
• Ohio Proud’s state-of-the-art mobile kitchen on-site at the event for use by event chefs
• Exciting wine pairings from regional wineries Kinkead Ridge, Harmony Hill & Equus Run
• Cash bar after dinner and live music by the Sidecars

The idea of eating local food has caught on so much that there’s even a word for it: “locavore” – someone who tries to eat only food grown locally. And the evidence in our community is everywhere. From the growing number of farmers markets to community gardens to food blogs to local restaurant menus, there is a surge of interest in food grown and processed locally.
